Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena Kinta'nija Peres; April 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995) popularly referred to as Selena, was an American Tejano singer. She was dubbed the "Queen of Tejano music" her contributions to music and fashion have made her one of the most popular Mexican-American entertainers from the second half of the 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their 2020 list of "Greatest Latino Artists" Based on Latin albums and Latin charts of music. Her attire earned her the name "Tejano Madonna". Her choices in clothing also make her one of the most important Latin artists. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla. The singer was frequently criticized during the 1980s and she was refused bookings at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, a predominantly male-dominated genre. Her popularity increased when she received the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. The award was won nine times. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her self-titled debut album in the same year. During that time, her brother was her primary music producer and songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) and reached top of the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. The album's popularity in the marketplace was praised by music critics as making it the "breakthrough" record of her career. One of the songs, "Como la Flor" was a huge hit and became her signature song. Live! (1993) won Best American/Mexican Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to win this award. In 1994 she released Amor Prohibido, which became one of the most popular Latin albums sold in the United States. The album was widely acclaimed as the first Tejano music album that was commercially viable, and it quickly became one the most well-known Latin subgenres of Latin music of the time.
